Land owners in Bangalore can walk into their nearest assistant revenue office (ARO) to get the benefit of improvement charges popularly known as betterment charges from Thursday. The state government issued orders one day before the model code of conduct was imposed on Wednesday for parliament elections.

BBMP commissioner M Lakshminarayana said, “Orders have been issued and now it is final that BBMP will be collecting improvement charges. We have a chance to collect a crore of rupees in the form of revenue and it will also benefit the land owners whose sites or land have already been converted by deputy commissioner’s office from agricultural to residential or commercial purposes.” The 2-tier system will come into force and improvement fee will be collected from the year 2007. The 98 newly added areas and 111 villages need to pay Rs 250 per sq metre while the older 100 wards which fall under core Bangalore will have to pay Rs 200 per sq metre improvement charges. “
