SUPREME COURT OF INDIA GIVES NOD TO KUDANKULAM NUCLEAR PROJECT

The controversial power project set up in Kudankulam, around 650 kilometres south of Chennai, with two Russian-made, 1,000-MW nuclear reactors for the generation of power had been in the news for quite some time and there were objections, agitations and public outcry regarding the environmental hazards of nuclear plant. The fishermen and the localites had petitioned the Madras High Court and an appeal was pending before the Apex court.

Today, The top court observed that development of nuclear energy is important for India and allowing the plant is in larger public interest and has given its nod to go ahead with the generation of power, thus dismissing the bunch of petitions challenging the Madras High Court Orders
