Pay betterment fee, get ‘A’ khata

BANGALORE: This could mean better times for property owners. The BBMP will soon start collecting betterment charges to provide ‘A’ khata for regularization of sites. The much-awaited facility was approved by mayor BS Sathyanarayana at the council meeting on Wednesday.

Owners of deputy commissioner-converted properties can are eligible to obtain ‘A’ khata by paying the stipulated fee. The Palike will collect a betterment fee of Rs 200 per square meter in its 100 old wards, and Rs 250 per square meter in the remaining 98 wards of New Bangalore. Currently, these owners only have ‘B’ khata which doesn’t entitle them to bank loans. Such plots didn’t wouldn’t have approvals from civic agencies like BDA or other planning authorities. The Palike will increase betterment fee by 10% every year. A senior official said the commissioner will issue a detailed circular on this.

Kacharakanahalli ward councilor, Padmanabh Reddy, and a few others demanded the mayor provide ‘A’ khata for revenue site owners through betterment fees. They alleged BBMP revenue officers were taking bribes and selling ‘A’ khatas to owners of revenue sites. The mayor said he’ll set up a committee to hold an inquiry into the alleged ‘A’ khata scam.

Garbage makes noise

The first two hours of the meeting saw angry councilors demanding BVG India, the firm which bagged the contract for garbage collection, be blacklisted. They alleged the company wasn’t paying pourakarmikas adequately, and garbage heaps remained uncleared in many parts of the city. BBMP commissioner M Lakshminarayana said he will issue a notice to BVG.

Referring to the Mandur mess and the June 1 deadline set by residents there to stop dumping waste, the commissioner said, “It’ll continue till we have more garbage processing units in place.” On Thursday. MLA Aravind Limbavali, minister Ramalinga Reddy and Palike officials will hold talks with villagers to sort out the crisis.
